Reddish Egret
In the 2002 Birds of North America account, the Reddish Egret is called, “North America’s rarest and least known heron.” Nearly extirpated from the United States as a result of plume hunting, the species today is still recovering from this impact. Biologists are beginning to understand the status and distribution of this species in Mexico, but much remains to be learned. Although no longer threatened by plume hunting, habitat degradation and loss and disturbance and nest and roost sites continue to threaten this species.
SJV partners in Mexico are undertaking studies to better understand the status and distribution of Reddish Egret, including conservation threats.
