Grassland Birds Best Management Practices Pocket Guide

by Jennie Duberstein / Tuesday, 01 March 2016 / Published in Awards Program

Project Description

Land managers often lack easy access to detailed habitat requirements for grassland birds. The best management practices for grassland bird species vary by location and species. Production of an easy to use pocket guide that is linked to the NRCS soil based key to major land resource areas in Arizona will greatly assist grassland managers. In Arizona large-scale grassland restoration and maintenance projects are typically funded for big game and livestock values. Proponents have little to no idea how to assess the positive or negative impacts of habitat projects on grassland birds. The publication of an easy to use best management practices pocket guide book will facilitate grassland bird habitat requirements being integrated into project design. The pocket guide will offer direct guidance to big game habitat projects affecting grassland bird habitats. Primary audiences are ranchers, state and federal land managers, and community members and non-profits engaged in grassland habitat protection and restoration.
