Project Description
Terra Peninsular and Intermountain Bird Observatory were awarded $14,960 to coordinate wintering Long-billed Curlew monitoring in Mexicali Valley and Northern Gulf of California, Mexico. Long-billed Curlew populations have declined and distributions have shrunk, likely due to a variety of factors including transformation and degradation of grassland and wetland habitat. The project will build on prior and ongoing work to track curlews that have been fitted with satellite transmitters to identify critical wintering habitat in order to fill information gaps, as well as to maintain and enhance binational cooperative working relationships. The project seeks to contribute to larger-scale conservation efforts by estimating wintering Long-billed Curlew abundance and distribution across Northwest Mexico.
