Federico Méndez Sánchez
Federico Méndez Sánchez is the Executive Director of Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas, A.C. (GECI), a Mexican civil society organization fully devoted to the restoration and conservation of islands. He is an Oceanographer with a Masters of Science in Environmental Management from The University of Auckland, New Zealand. He just completed his PhD at Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste, S.C. (CIBNOR). Federico has 13-years’ experience on both island restoration and natural resources management. For the past two decades, GECI has successfully eradicated 60 populations of invasive mammals from 39 Mexican islands, many in northwestern Mexico—Baja California Pacific and Gulf of California—. These actions have positively benefited over 200 seabird breeding colonies. Therefore, Federico’s interest in joining SJV’s Management Board is to contribute to further advance and consolidate the conservation of birds within the region, with a special focus on seabird islands. Of course, his favorite habitat from the SJV’s region are islands, with Guadalupe Island close to his heart; his very special bird is the endemic Guadalupe Murrelet.
