Project Description
Spearheaded by Borderlands Restoration Network and Quail Forever, this project will restore grassland habitat in southeast Arizona to support Montezuma Quail and other priority species. The work leverages support from hunting interest groups, the public, and private landowners to expand on over $400,000 of existing grassland and oak-woodland restoration work on the >1,000 acre Borderlands Wildlife Preserve. At least 100 rock dams will be constructed and the area seeded with seed pellets to repair gully cuts, increase sedimentation and accumulation of organic matter, and increase establishment of food plants for grassland birds, including Montezuma Quail. Partners will conduct bird surveys to monitor the effects of these activities on quail and other birds. The impact of this work will be magnified through volunteerism and field-day events to encourage private landowners to adopt these methods for quail habitat restoration.
