Descripci\u00f3n del proyecto<\/span><\/h2>\n

La Ci\u00e9nega de Santa Clara es el humedal m\u00e1s grande en el Desierto Sonorense, que se extiende a m\u00e1s de 5,800 hect\u00e1reas. Sustenta a casi el 75% de la poblaci\u00f3n total de palmoteador de Yuma, ave end\u00e9mica de los humedales del bajo R\u00edo Colorado y su delta, protegida como especie en peligro de extinci\u00f3n en Estados Unidos y amenazada en M\u00e9xico. La Ci\u00e9nega de Santa Clara tambi\u00e9n sustenta importantes n\u00fameros de polluela negra de California (en peligro de extinci\u00f3n en M\u00e9xico), el rasc\u00f3n lim\u00edcola (bajo protecci\u00f3n especial en M\u00e9xico), el avetoro norte\u00f1o y m\u00ednimo, as\u00ed como cientos de miles de aves costeras, patos y gansos. La intenci\u00f3n de este proyecto es realizar quemas en ciertas partes de la Ci\u00e9nega de Santa Clara \/aproximadamente el 20% de la ci\u00e9naga; casi 1,100 Ha.) para poder rejuvenecer la vegetaci\u00f3n emergente y mejorar el h\u00e1bitat para el palmoteador de Yuma, la polluela negra de California y dem\u00e1s aves. Los incendios se realizar\u00e1n en \u00e1reas identificadas que muestran un aumento en la densidad de totora, la acumulaci\u00f3n de material vegetal muerto, y la reducci\u00f3n en la densidad de aves acu\u00e1ticas. Estas actividades las llevar\u00e1 a cabo un equipo binacional que participa en la conservaci\u00f3n de rasc\u00f3n a lo largo del bajo R\u00edo Colorado, incluyendo la Reserva de la Bi\u00f3sfera del Alto Golfo de California y Delta del R\u00edo Colorado, la Unidad de Investigaci\u00f3n de Pesca y Vida Silvestre de la Cooperativa Arizona, la Oficina de Administraci\u00f3n de Tierras y Pronatura Noroeste. El equipo realizar\u00e1 monitoreos siguiendo los Protocolos de Monitoreo Estandarizados para Aves Acu\u00e1ticas de Norteam\u00e9rica, antes de las quemas y al menos tres a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de las mismas como herramienta de evaluaci\u00f3n para valorar la efectividad del proyecto.<\/p>\n

The Ci\u00e9nega de Santa Clara is the largest marsh wetland in the Sonoran Desert, extending over 5,800 hectares. It supports nearly 75% of the total population of the Yuma Clapper Rail, an endemic marshbird of the Lower Colorado River and its delta that is protected as Endangered in the United States and Threatened in Mexico. The Ci\u00e9nega de Santa Clara also supports significant numbers of California Black Rail (Endangered in Mexico), Virginia Rail (Under Special Protection in Mexico), American and Least bitterns, as well as hundreds of thousands of shorebirds, ducks, and geese. The purpose of this project is to conduct prescribed burns on some portions of the Ci\u00e9nega de Santa Clara (approximately 20% of the Ci\u00e9nega; about 1,100 ha) in order to rejuvenate the emergent vegetation and enhance the habitat for Yuma Clapper Rail, California Black Rail, and other birds. The fires will be conducted in areas that have been identified as showing an increase in cattail density, an accumulation of dead plant material, and a reduction in marshbird densities. These activities will be conducted by a binational team that has been involved with rail conservation along the Lower Colorado River, including the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve, the Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the Bureau of Land Management, and Pronatura Noroeste. The team will conduct marshbird surveys, following the Standardized North American Marshbird Monitoring Protocols, prior to the prescribed burns and at least three years after the burns as an assessment tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the project. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
